Elvis is in the building

Tonight sees the two National League clubs most favoured for a Super League licence next year going at it. The future seems pretty bright for Widnes. They have started well to eradicate their minus points total—the result of a deduction for going into administration. Newish owner Steve O’Connor seems to be making the right moves and the right noises, he’s certainly impressed administratotrs, journalists and supporters alike. However, there’s been some bickering on the forum recently about whose application is the strongest: Salford’s or Widnes’s. So tonight could be edgy in certain quarters; the spies will be out with scrutiny being the order of the day. It’s a pointless argument, however. The applications are already in. Surely there’s nothing else that can sway the people making the licence recommendations. So as flag wavers for the traditional heartland clubs, surely we should support each others’ bids. I think Elvis Presley said it best, when he so poignantly sang: ‘We can’t go on together with suspicious minds; and we can’t build our dreams on suspicious minds.’
