Big test for the Salford faithful is Batley away. Certainly sorts out the men from the boys. Last week’s soaking at Leigh brought back memories of that game at Mount Pleasant: where the unmentionable conditions played hell with the unmentionables. Mind you, we hear a Reflex has opened in Dewsbury so there’s an added incentive to make an acceptable dick of yourself. Might be a toughie on the pitch too. Batley have started the league season well: first losing a close one at home to Widnes (who snatched victory at the death) followed by defeating Whitehaven comprehensively in Cumbria—something Salford couldn’t manage in 2003. Another stiff challenge for the Reds then…hopefully.
Your tune for this week is Incognito’s version of ‘Always There’, with the always dependable Jocelyn Brown on vocals. There have been many covers and samplers of this Ronnie Laws instrumental, of which we’re including another two. The original vocal by Side Effect, which, incidentally, I picked up an original pressing for peanuts from a stall in Afflecks Palace around ten years ago. Just looked on eBay and my eyes went all pound signey. T’other ditty is the hands-in-the-air Brothers In Rhythm take, for those who remember Fantazia mix tapes and the like.
