Tonight is the Reds’ last group fixture in the Northern Rail Cup, so it’s fair (or perhaps unfair) to say that it signals the end of our tenure in the ‘comfort zone’. To our competition: I don’t mean that in a derogatory way, not at all. It’s just that when National League Two clubs—already disadvantaged against Salford by circumstance—are even playing their reserves against you (as Swinton blatently did a few weeks back), it becomes hard to get yourself up for what should be a forgone conculsion. Neither is it great preparation for what lies ahead next week.
Considering this match against Rochdale is our last before the league begins, Salford’s players still need to impress. However, you’d be forgiven for already looking forward the knockout draw on Sunday.
So while you’re in this chilled out state, the calm before the storm as it were, what is the perfect musical companion? How does a Lonnie Liston Smith bassline grab you? If you’ve played Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Cruising through Little Havana in a 1950s tank of a car, decked out in an Hawaiian shirt and your whitest fat man cap. Said bassline—as featured on ‘Expansions’—was also nabbed by Stetsasonic, a hip-hop band that plied their trade when the genre wasn’t ‘all about the benjamins’ nor popping caps in peoples’ asses. And if ‘Talkin’ All That Jazz’ doesn’t perk you up, take an added dose: flavoured by a Parisian discomeister.
