SL clubs have voted to increase the salary cap in stages to a mx of £2.1 million by 2020. There are also changes to the Marquee ruling which allows a club to have 2 marquee players. Here the rules seem more confusing ........

From the Guardian website:

"Increase in number of Marquee Players

• Each Super League club would be entitled to dispensation for two Marquee Players whose Salary Cap value would be (but for the Regulation) £175k or more.

• The Regulation would distinguish between Marquee Players as follows: (i) Club Trained Marquee Players be deemed to have a Salary Cap Value of £75k; and (ii) all other Marquee Players be deemed to have a Salary Cap Value of £150k."

So reading the above does a marquee player who is not club trained have a value on the cap of £175k or £150k (as per the regulation)

I think put simply

Wigan, Sam T (eg) only £75k will be reduced from the £2.1m club cap although he will be paid £xxxxxxs


Wire, Clark £150k comes off our £2.1m cap but will get £xxxxxxs

2 marquee......the down side is....it opens the door of new negotiation from Pies to keep George Williams.

But at least he'll stay in our game as opposed to the NRL. Overall its a good thing that the cap has been increased but I still think they should have gone further and had a bigger cap with marquee players not counting against it. Only then would we be able to compete against RU and the NRL

I think it means that a non club trained player only counts as £150K on the cap, but to qualify as a marquee player the club must be paying him £175k or more.

I'd have gone one further and scrapped it all together, we must be the only sport that stops it's money men from investing in it..!

Does the salary cap increase & new marquee player rule mean we will now be able to entice top southern hemisphere players over here or that we will just be paying more for the same quality that has been available for the last few years ? I fear the latter.

Stupid cap increase. Does absolutely nothing to stave off the threat from RU or NRL and jointly absolutely nothing to help entice players from either sport to Superleague. We'll just ending spending the extra cap on the Matty Russell's / Ryan Atkins of this world.
